Editing tools on TikTok


You can use our advanced editing tools to further enhance your posts on TikTok. The editing tools include:
•  Overlay and sound effects
•  Video effects
•  Multi-track editing
• AI editing effects

To open the editing tools:
1. In the TikTok app, tap the Add post + button at the bottom. 2. Take a photo or video. Alternatively, you can also tap the Upload button to use a photo or video from your device. From here:
   ༚ If you recorded a video, tap the Edit button on the side panel to open the editing tools. You may need to tap the Continue ✓ button at the bottom.
   ༚ If you took a photo, tap the Edit button on the side panel to open the editing tool.
   ༚ If you uploaded content, tap Next, then tap the Edit button on the side panel to open the editing tool.






How to upload additional videos or photos


To upload additional videos or photos:
1. From the editing screen, tap the Add + button. You'll be brought to the photos and videos on your device. If you want to preview other albums or content saved on your device, tap Recents at the top.

2. Select a photo or video. From here:
   ༚ To preview your content before you upload, tap the photo or video. If you wish to add it, tap Select at the bottom, then tap Confirm.
   ༚ To upload your content directly, tap Confirm.






How to edit a clip


To edit a clip or rearrange its order:
1. From the editing screen, tap a clip or tap Edit at the bottom. From here:
   ༚ To shorten or lengthen a clip, hold and drag the arrow on either side of the clip.
   ༚ To split a clip, place the line on the clip where you want to split it, then tap Split at the bottom.
   ༚ To rearrange the clip order, press and hold the clip and drag it to adjust its order in the track.
   ༚ To adjust zoom, pinch in or out on the clip.






How to adjust the speed of a clip


To speed up or slow down a video clip:
1. From the editing screen, tap a clip or tap Edit at the bottom. This feature is only available on video clips.
2. Tap Speed at the bottom.
3. Tap Normal or Curve at the bottom, then select a video speed.
4. Tap the exit button to save the speed to the clip you selected.


Keep in mind you can only add one speed option to each clip.






How to add sound


To add or replace a sound:
1. From the editing screen, tap Sound at the bottom.
2. Select Add sound or Replace if there is a sound on the clip. You can also tap the sound below the track to replace it.
3. Select or search for a sound. The sound will automatically be added to your post.
4. Tap the sound clip to make additional edits.

To add a sound effect:
1. From the editing screen, tap Sound at the bottom, then select Sound effect.
2. Select any sound to preview it. You can tap the Favorites button to save a sound for later use.
3. Tap Use to save the sound effect to your video.


To add a voiceover:
1. From the editing screen, tap Sound at the bottom, then select Voiceover.
2. Tap the Record button to record your voiceover.
3. Tap Done to save your voiceover audio.






How to add and edit transitions


To add transitions between clips:
1. From the editing screen, tap the Transition button between your clips.
2. Select a transition to preview or add it to your content. From here:
   ༚ To replay the transition, tap it again.
   ༚ To apply the transition to all existing clips, tap Apply to all
3. Tap the Close button to save your edit.

Important things to know about using transitions:
• You can only add a transition if you're editing multiple clips.
• The transition length may differ depending on how long your clip is.






How to add and edit text


To add and edit text:
1. From the editing screen, tap Text at the bottom.
2. Enter the text you'd like to add.
3. Tap the Continue ✓ button. From here:
   ༚ To arrange the text, hold the text below the video track and move it.
   ༚ To change the duration of the text, hold and drag the arrow on either side to make it shorter or longer.
   ༚ To edit the text, tap the text on the preview screen to edit it, or tap Edit at the bottom.
4. Tap the text sticker or the text below the video track and tap Copy to duplicate the text. The new text will be inserted directly below the original. Hold and drag the text on the preview screen to adjust it, or move the text below the video track.






How to use the Magic tool


The Magic tool helps you edit your posts by automatically adding special effects, such as video and audio effects.

To use the Magic tool:
1. From the editing screen, tap Magic at the bottom.
2. Select an editing style to automatically apply it to your clip. To replay the effects, tap it again.
3. Tap the Continue ✓ button to save your edits.






How to use AI Create


AI Create allows you to generate an image or video using text prompts and your own photos and videos. You can use AI Create after uploading a video or photo.


Note: This feature isn't currently available everywhere.


To use AI Create:
1. In the TikTok app, tap the Add post + button at the bottom.
2. Take a photo or video. You can also tap the Upload button to use a photo or video from your device. This photo or video doesn't have to be related to the type of content you want to generate.
3. Tap the Edit button on the side panel. If creating a video, you'll need to tap the Continue ✓ button first.
4. From the editing screen, tap AI Create at the bottom.
5. Tap AI Image or AI Video. If it's your first time using AI Create, you'll need to grant the app access to use your prompt and/or photos.
6. Enter your text prompt, then tap Generate. For AI Videos, you can also upload a photo with your prompt.
7. Once your image or video is complete, you can:
Use generated content
   ༚ Select your preferred image or video from the options provided.
Regenerate your content
   ༚ Tap Regenerate to create a new image or video.
   ༚ Tap Modify to edit your text prompt and/or photo.
   ༚ To create a video from an AI Image, tap Generate video. Enter a text prompt and upload a new photo or use the previously generated AI Image. Tap Generate.


You can use other features on TikTok while your AI Create is generating. Before leaving the editing screen, tap Generate as draft. We'll notify you when your post is complete.


Important things to know about AI Create:
• You'll have a limited number of regenerations available each day.
• Any prompts and photos you upload must follow our Community Guidelines.
• Avoid using prompts or photos that contain personal information or photos of others without their consent.
• AI Create content is for reference only and should be used responsibly. You'll be responsible if content you upload infringes on third-party rights.
• We'll store any prompts and content you upload for up to 30 days before being deleted.






How to edit overlays


Overlays allow you to layer videos or photos over your video and image clips.

To edit overlays:
1. From the editing screen, tap Overlay at the bottom. You'll be brought to the photos and videos on your device.
2. Select the item you'd like to use as the overlay for your clips.
3. Tap Next. The item will be placed on top of your clip. From here:
   ༚ Pinch in and out to adjust the size of the overlay, or hold and drag it to change its location.
   ༚ Hold and drag the arrow on either side of the overlay clip to edit the length.






Frequently Asked Questions


Is there a maximum amount of items I can upload or edit within a single post?
You can upload up to 35 items in a single editing session, which can include photos and videos. For overlays, you can add up to 8 items. You can add one sound to your post.

Can I use my device camera in the TikTok app?
No, you can't record content with your device camera directly in the TikTok app. You can only use the camera tool within the TikTok app. If you prefer to use your own device camera, you can record the content separately and then upload it to TikTok.

Does editing work for Duet and Stitch videos?
Yes, you can use our editing tools for all Duet and Stitch TikTok videos.
