Editing tools on TikTok


You can use our advanced editing tools to further enhance your videos. The editing tools include:
•  Overlay and sound effects
•  Video effects
•  Multi-track editing

To open the editing tools in TikTok:
1. In the TikTok app, tap the Add post + button at the bottom.
2. On the recording screen, select a video length (10m, 60s, 15s), then tap the Record button to capture your video. Alternatively, tap Upload if you wish to use a video on your device instead.
3. Tap the Continue ✓ button at the bottom to use the video clip and continue to the editing screen. Or, if you've uploaded content, tap Next.
4. Tap the Edit button on the side panel to open the editing tool.






How to upload additional videos or photos in editing


To upload additional videos or photos:
1. On the editing screen, tap the Add + button next to the video track. You'll be brought to the photos and videos on your device. Select the secondary dropdown menu to preview other albums and items saved to your device.
2. Select an item. You can select up to 35 items to upload into one editing session. Tap on any item to preview before you upload.
   ༚  If you preview an item, tap Next to insert the item into your editing session. If you choose to not insert the item, tap the Back button and deselect the item.
3. After you've selected your items for upload, tap Confirm at the bottom to upload.






How to edit a clip in editing


To edit the length of a clip or to break up a video track:
1. Press and hold on a clip and drag it to adjust its place in the video track.
2. Tap the desired clip or tap Edit at the bottom.
3. To shorten or lengthen a track, hold and drag the arrow on either side of the clip.
4. To split a clip, drag the time indicator on the video track to your desired point in the video.
5. Tap Split to break up the clip.

To zoom in and out, tap the desired clip. Using two fingers, slide outward or inwards to adjust zoom.






How to adjust the speed of a clip in editing


To speed up or slow down a video clip:
1. From the editing screen, tap Edit or select the desired video clip. This feature is only available on video clips.
2. Tap Speed at the bottom.
3. Adjust the slider to preview different speeds.
4. Tap Save to set the speed. If you'd like to apply the speed to all of your clips, tap Apply to all.






How to add sound in editing


To add a sound:
1. From the editing screen, tap Sound and select Add sound. You can also tap Add sound below the video track.
2. Select your desired sound and tap Use. The sound will automatically be added to your video. Tap the Favorites button to save a sound for later use.
3. Tap the sound clip to enter edit mode to adjust the length, replace, change the volume, or remove.
4. Hold and drag the arrow on either side of the sound clip to adjust the length.

You can also add recommended music to your videos through the in-app music library. To add recommended music. After selecting Add sound, tap the Recommended tab to see trending audio.

To add a sound effect:
1. From the editing screen, tap Sound at the bottom.
2. Tap Sound effect.
3. Select any sound to preview. Tap the Favorites button to save a sound for later use.
4. Tap Use to add the sound effect to the editor.






How to add and edit transitions


To add transitions between clips:
1. From the editing screen, tap the Transition button between your desired clips.
2. Tap a transition to preview it and add to your clips. You can tap the Play video button to replay a preview. Note that transition length depends on the selected video length.
3. To apply a transition to all existing clips, tap Apply to all before closing out of the transition tool. Tap the Close button to exit the transition menu.






How to add and edit text


To add and edit text:
1. From the editing screen, tap Text at the bottom menu.
2. Tap Add text and insert your desired text.
3. Press and hold the text below the video track to move it to your desired clip. Tap the text sticker and hold and drag the arrow on either side to edit its duration. You can also tap the text sticker on the preview screen to edit.
4. Tap the text sticker or the text below the video track and tap Copy to duplicate the text. The new text will be inserted directly behind the original. Hold and drag the sticker text on the preview screen to relocate it.






How to use Magic in editing


Magic allows you to speed up the editing process by auto-editing core video features like keyframes, masking, overlay, and audio.

To use the Magic tool:
1. After recording or uploading your content, go to the editing tool.
2. Tap Magic at the bottom menu.
3. Select an editing style to automatically apply it to your clip.
4. Preview your clip and exit Magic to save your edits.






How to edit overlays


To edit overlays:
1. From the editing screen, tap Overlay at the bottom. You'll be brought to the photos and videos on your device.
2. Select the item you'd like to use as the overlay for your clips. To explore your device's collection of photos and videos, select the secondary dropdown menu to preview other albums.
3. Tap Next. The item will be placed on top of your video. Use two fingers to zoom in and out to change the size of the overlay or hold and drag to change its location. To edit the length of the overlay, hold and drag the arrow on either side of the overlay clip.






FAQ


Is there a maximum amount of items I can upload or edit within a single video?
You can upload up to 35 items in a single editing session, which can include photos and videos. For overlays, you can add up to eight items. You can add one sound to your video.

Can I use my device camera in the TikTok app?
No, you can't record content with your device camera directly in the TikTok app. You can only use the camera tool within the TikTok app. If you prefer to use your own device camera, you can record the content separately and then upload it to TikTok.

Does editing work for Duet and Stitch videos?
Yes, you can use our editing tools for all Duet and Stitch TikTok videos.
