Providing your tax information on TikTokFor U.S. creatorsFor non-U.S. creatorsAbout Form 1042-S

All creators collecting rewards on TikTok must provide tax information, if applicable under US tax regulations. While we can't provide tax advice, we've gathered these FAQs to help you submit the necessary documentation. For guidance on your specific tax situation, we recommend consulting with a tax advisor.

Providing your tax information on TikTok

Why do I need to provide my Tax Identification Number (TIN)?
If you're a creator monetizing on TikTok, you're required to provide your TIN. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires TikTok to obtain your tax information before making any payments to you. If you don't provide your TIN, TikTok may be required to withhold taxes, and you may be ineligible to participate in any current or future programs you have joined or may join.

How do I provide my tax information?
You can provide your tax information by completing one of the following forms:
• Form W-9 (for U.S. citizens)
• Form W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E (for non-U.S. citizens or entities)

To complete your Form W-9 or the applicable Form W-8, you can go to your wallet where you manage your payment method. Tap Tax information, then choose the form that applies to you. You'll be directed to a page where you can enter and securely certify your tax information.

For U.S. creators

What tax information should I provide?
You'll need to provide your legal name and corresponding TIN. If you're a disregarded entity, you can instead provide the appropriate documentation of the owner of such entity. Additionally, you must provide your address and federal tax classification.

Who needs to complete a Form W-9?
U.S. citizens or U.S. resident aliens are required to complete a W-9 form.

Visit the IRS website to learn more about Form W-9.

For non-U.S. creators

Why am I being asked to provide U.S. tax documentation if I'm not a U.S. creator?
As a creator on TikTok, you may collect rewards from U.S. engagement within the United States. Form W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E documents your tax status as a non-U.S. creator for U.S. income tax purposes on rewards from U.S. sources and any U.S. taxes withheld, if applicable. Proper documentation of your tax status helps ensure that the reported and withheld taxable amount is accurate based on your tax status.

Should I complete a Form W-8BEN or BEN-E if I'm a U.S. creator?
No. If you're a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien, you must complete a Form W-9 instead. We'll guide you to the correct form based on your responses.

What happens if I don't provide tax documentation?
You're required to provide proper tax documentation to participate in monetization programs and gain access to amounts earned. If you don't complete your tax documentation, your rewards may be presumed to be fully subject to U.S. taxes and subject to mandatory withholding.

When should I update my tax information?
You must update your tax information when the information previously provided is no longer accurate, such as a change in your name, TIN, or tax residency. You should also update your information if you identify any errors in your initial submission.

Are my rewards subject to U.S. taxes?
If you are not a U.S. citizen, only the portion of your rewards generated from U.S. engagement is generally subject to U.S. tax. Tax withholding typically applies at a rate of 30% on U.S. source income.

What type of tax forms will I receive?
As a non-U.S. citizen, you will receive Form 1042-S to report rewards generated from U.S. sources and any U.S. taxes withheld, if applicable.

About Form 1042-S

What is Form 1042-S?
Form 1042-S is a U.S. information return provided to non-U.S. citizens to report rewards generated from U.S. sources, including rewards from U.S. engagement. The form reflects the amount of U.S.-source rewards subject to tax and the amount withheld, if applicable.

Do I need to file a U.S. tax return if I received a Form 1042-S?
Generally, non-U.S. citizens who have the appropriate amount of U.S. rewards reported and withholding applied on Form 1042-S are not required to file a U.S. tax return.

Can I get a refund from the U.S. tax withholding?
TikTok isn't responsible for processing or assisting with any refund claims related to tax amounts withheld and reported on Form 1042-S. If the amount of tax withheld exceeds your actual U.S. tax liability based on your specific situation, you must apply for a refund directly from the IRS, either independently or with the assistance of a tax advisor.

When will I receive Form 1042-S?
Form 1042-S is generally issued by March 15th of the year following the year in which the payment was made, but delivery may be delayed by up to 30 days.

Should my Form 1042-S include rewards that haven't been paid out to me yet?
Yes. Rewards are reported when they're reflected on your TikTok account, regardless of whether they are paid out to you. Please refer to IRS resources for additional information.
