What are content levels?

Content levels offer age-appropriate and safe content viewing modes, which filter out TikTok posts that might not be suitable for a wide audience or teens under 18 years old. We understand that people may want to avoid certain types of content because of their personal preferences even if the content doesn't violate our Community Guidelines. Content levels provide an additional layer of safety on TikTok. We continue to remove content that violates our Community Guidelines.

What are the types of content levels?

We categorize our content levels by using the content classification guidelines below.

General audience content level

The general audience content level is suitable for a wide audience because it allows people to filter out a broad selection of content based on themes like language, violence, or substances. Anyone on TikTok can opt into general audience content through Restricted Mode.

It may contain:
•  Mildly frightening and non-threatening imagery
•  Mild crude humor and slang or innuendo
•  Action and adventure sequences
•  Subtle affection
•  Sexual education in a clinical or medical context

It may NOT contain:
•  Focus on fear or suffering
•  Profanity or vulgarity
•  Serious violence, dangerous behavior, or threatening imagery, including blood
•  Sexually suggestive content
•  Explicit references to mature or complex themes

Age-restricted content level

Age-restricted content on TikTok may include content with mature or complex themes that may not be suitable for a wide audience. Only adults 18 years and older can view content that we classify as age-restricted content.

It may contain:
•  Strong and frightening imagery or suspenseful scenarios
•  Vulgar dialogue
•  Graphic violence and gore in a fictional, documentary, or news context
•  Sexualized behavior (but not nudity, which is a violation of our policies)
•  Strong use of alcohol or tobacco by adults
•  Detailed drug references
•  Detailed discussions of mature or complex themes without endorsement of harmful behavior
•  Dangerous stunts by non-professionals without serious physical harm

It may NOT contain the following, which violates our Community Guidelines:
•  Hate speech or harassment
•  Real-life gore, extreme physical fighting, or accidents
•  Sexual acts or full nudity
•  Illegal drug use
•  Any other content that violates our Community Guidelines
